NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

 CARF-CCAC Surveyors Assess Meadow Lakes

The CARF-CCAC* survey takes place every five years. CARF is an independent, nonprofit accreditor of health and human services whose mission is “to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services of the organization evaluated. Through accreditation, CARF assists organizations to improve the quality of their services, helps them to demonstrate value, and to meet international standards."

The accreditation process applies sets of standards to service areas and business practices duriing an on-site survey

This year's survey took place from May 7 to 9th.  The surveyors, Brenda Yost, Executive Director of Grace Ridge CCRC in Morganton, NC and Bruce Jones, Director of Health Services at Vicar's Landing, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, are pictured at right.  They met residents and staff in a collegial atmosphere, asking questions and observing us in our environment.  The survey process they followed centered on enhancing our lives and was based on established standards.

At Meadow Lakes, managers from each department across the organization prepared the responses to the CARF standards and they work toward achieving these standards year round. We must meet annual requirements and are revalidated annually. Our excellence is demonstrated by the way we respond to the standards.

While the survey takes place only every five years, accreditation is an ongoing process, signaling that we are committed to continuously improving services and serving the community. Accreditation also demonstrates our commitment to enhance performance and to distinguish ourselves from other similar organizations. It is through this process that a community such as ours becomes an accredited CCRC (Continuning Care Retirement Community).   Results of the survey are expected to come to us in June.

The Forum is the residents' association of Meadow Lakes. All residents are members of the association and may participate on committees and volunteer in other ways to serve the community.
Toward the end of the year, residents accept donations toward the Employee's Holiday Fund. To offer thanks to the many employees who support us all year and do not receive gifts or gratuities at any time, we give as generously as we can to the Holiday Fund.
Another important program of the Forum is the Education Award Program that gives tuition grants to excellent employees. Descriptions of this program may be found on the Employee page and on the Committee page of this site.
With collection of the annual fund in summer, the Forum Executive Committee develops a budget that supports programs and cultural events, the Library, the Meadow Lark, our quarterly newsletter, and much more.

MEADOW LAKES FOLLIES 2009

Celebrating our "Favorite Things"

With Doris Willens Kaplan's clever lyrics, Don Smith's masterful piano, the excellent voices of (from left to right) Stu Hunter, Tony Baionno, Phoebe Ballard, Carl Schorske, Dana Stevenson, Joe Kelly, and Elizabeth Wadsworth, the annual follies was a resounding success. Judith Hawk, the show's Director, is commended for this wonderful performance describing Meadow Lakes as we know it. The pictures below show what we saw as the program was opened with a brief introduction by the show's author, Doris Kaplan, and a rousing musical Overture by the inimitable, Don Smith.

ARCHITECTURAL AWARD

In a ceremony at the annual meeting of AAHSA, the American Association of Housing and Services for the Aging, on October 21, 2007, the American Institute of Architects presented its first ever “Design for Aging Ten Year Award” to Meadow Lakes.

Given to architectural projects that have been completed for more than ten years, the award acknowledges a design that was both excellent when opened and that has survived the test of time. With today’s customers and changed environment, Meadow Lakes at forty-three is valued and is relevant to today’s society. Its design fits today’s programs.

“Award-winning properties exemplify innovation, high-quality design, and longevity,” according to Mitch Green, Chair of AIA’s Design for Aging Knowledge Committee. “These properties had a profound effect on the senior living industry and offer valuable lessons that are applicable in today’s competitive environment.”

Meadow Lakes was one of the first continuing care retirement community (CCRC) projects to adopt a campus plan. “It unified the various sections of the site, placing them all under one roof,” Green explained. “Through the use of wide brick and glass corridors Meadow Lakes incorporates the external environment, lakes, woods, and fields, into its design.”Architect and current resident, Tony Baionno, can take pride in this award. He served on the original design team!

The facility was built to accommodate changing resident needs and marketplace shifts and over the years key additions including assisted living, a memory care unit, independent living cottages, a lakeside café, and indoor pool and fitness center have been added. Further enhancing the viability of the Meadow Lakes community, a new 60-unit independent living building is under construction.

The award recognizes that Meadow Lakes is distinguished both by its unique design, and the importance placed on strong community leadership, responsiveness to resident needs and promotion of healthful aging.“We are honored to have been chosen by the AIA for this prestigious award,” said Jay Zimmer, Executive Director of Meadow Lakes, on accepting the award. “It demonstrates our tradition of commitment to the health and well-being of current and future residents.”
